What if part of my shipment is missing or damaged?
It is to your advantage to report damage as soon as possible. If you noticed the missing or damaged goods at the time of delivery, this is the time to detail them on the van driver's inventory sheet before you signed it. If you noticed damage after unpacking, a claim must be filed in writing, with a specific dollar amount stated, within nine (9) months after delivery (for interstate shipments - intrastate and local requirements may vary). You should first try to come to an agreement with your moving company. If that does not work and your moving company is a member of the AMSA, you may use the organization's Arbitration Program. AMSA's interstate members are mandated to arbitrate disputes of up to $5,000 arising from loss or damage to the articles in your shipment. In many cases, AMSA members will arbitrate disputes in excess of $5,000. To find out more, visit www.moving.org/before/solving.html.
What if I paid the extra money above and beyond the actual services performed so I could get my belongings back but still feel this was unfair?

How do I know if the charges are "legitimate"?
If you requested that additional services be added at origin or destination
or if a tariff requirement caused the additions, the total cost of
your move will increase. These services could be something like a
"shuttle" to or from a location to which a full-size van cannot operate
directly. Also, if you added items to be moved or you required additional
services such as packing, between the time of the estimate and the
time of your move, there will be additional charges. You are obligated
to pay any remaining charges upon receipt of the carrier's invoice
that will be sent 30 days after delivery of your shipment. This
includes charges for any additional services you requested or required
to properly service your shipment. |
