I chose my moving company, now what?
It is important to try to make arrangements for your move well in advance at least four to six weeks before the moving date. If at all possible, try not to move when everyone else wants to move. Throughout the year, the end of the month is a busy time for moving companies, because of the expiration of leases and preferred closing dates. The summer months are what moving companies call the "peak season" from May to mid-September, when children are out of school. Schedule summertime moves as far in advance as possible.
Keep a record of every contact you make with moving companies. Use a small notebook to keep track of everything.
If your items are damaged at the end of the move, make a record of it on the inventory form. Make sure the driver knows of the damage and have a record of the damage made on the driver's copy of the inventory.
After the complete shipment is unloaded, you will need to sign the driver's copy of the inventory to show you received the items listed. Do not sign until you are sure it is accurate and that any missing or damaged items have been properly noted. If you notice damage after unpacking, a claim must be filed in writing, with a specific dollar amount stated, within nine months after delivery. It is to your advantage to report damage as soon as possible.
