I have my estimate, now what?
If the estimates are close in price, how should you choose? Take into consideration the representative you met at the estimate. Was he or she attentive? Do you have confidence that the moving company will be there to help you, through planning, packing, and loading? The list of references you got at the time of estimate is important now. Take the time to call them and ask them about their moving process - you'll be glad you did.
Take a drive past the moving company's office/warehouse. Does it reflect the level of quality and professionalism you expect in a service provider? Check out their trucks and storage facility, making sure that the trucks are permanently marked with the company's name.
Moving companies are required by law to provide you with a copy of
the brochure "Your Rights and Responsibilities." The
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration provides both a PDF
version and an HTML version of the booklet. In this brochure,
the "110% Rule" is explained. The rule states that under a non-binding
estimate, the moving company cannot require you to pay more than the
amount of the original estimate, plus 10 percent, at the time of delivery.
You are obligated to pay any remaining charges, over the 110 percent
amount, upon receipt of the carrier's invoice that will be sent 30
days after delivery of your shipment. This includes charges
for any additional services you requested or required to properly
service your shipment. |
